Andrea Bang

In 1935, Andrea Bang was born in Nagoya, Japan. He started violin at the age of four. When the World War II was over in 1945, he went to Korea with his father. When the Korean War broke out in 1950, he encountered permanent separation from his father. While seeking shelters at Daegu, and he was picked up as a junior member of Education Department of Korean Air Force for musical concerts for soldiers.

Seeing h is unusual talent and unceasing effort to be a great violinist, a sponsor arranged with Paris Foreign Missions so that Andrea could go to Paris for further music studies at the age of 17. In Paris, while he received various assistances from sponsors of European high society, he had a valuable chance to study under the contemporary masters such as Yanovsky and Mullican.

Andrea Bang had an unusual honor and opportunity of acquiring a gift of a genuine Stradivari 1702 from Mullican.He performed as a member of Vivaldi String Quartet in Europe, where was his main stage, and also performed in a church orchestra.

While he mixed with celebrities, he diligently performed at charity concerts for the disabled. At these charitable activities, he met many prominent people including Dr. Schweitzer. When Dr. Schweitzer saw Andrea playing on an Old Italian masterpiece, he expressed his regret that such masterpieces were gradually disappearing and that even the remaining ones were losing their ideal sound due to aging. He suggested Andrea Bang to consider working to revive the sound of classic instruments and leave the achievement onto the next generation as a cultural heritage of humanity. At that moment, Andrea decided to accept Dr. Schweitzer's suggestion and began his research on varnishes of instruments and other related subjects since then.

He traveled extensively to Guinea, Ghana, Senegal, Gabon and other African regions and various Asian countries like India and Thailand in search of the old route of ingredient trade used 200 to 300 years ago. Excrements of wild insects, tropical tree sap, spruce cones and coffee beans were some of the many ingredients he tested for the natural varnish. He believed that varnish is an important aspect for string instrument. After hundreds of failures on materials and mixing combinations, he succeeded in finding the formulas for string instrument to provide its most ideal performance. The quality of Andrea's instruments is proved well by professional musicians.

Other than working on natural varnishes, Andrea developed osmotic treatment by special natural ingredients applied to bridges, sound posts for string instruments. In addition, he developed rosins specialized by types of string instrument and performance environment to provide ideal sound in a comprehensive way.
